Something to Celebrate

Our 200th-ish Retreat

Twelve courageous military families signed up for our Therapeutic Retreat in Texas.  Despite the emerging news and fears about the Covid-19 virus, every single family showed up ready to take the next steps in their family’s journey of healing.  All volunteers and all staff demonstrated their dedication and passion for serving by attending in full force.  Do you think Project Sanctuary’s programs and services might be needed during challenging times?  I believe this message came through loud and clear as these families were able to set aside the news of the pandemic and work their six-day program.

Project Sanctuary recently wrapped our “200-ish” retreat right before the mandatory travel restrictions and shelter-in-home orders took place.  Sequestered within a private conference center in Marble Falls, TX, they attended classes to strengthen communication and their relationships. They learned how to live with Post Traumatic Stress.  First Command’s financial class for the adults and for teens addressed basic skills and fiscal behaviors.  The children worked through emotions and reactions . . . and, we had a bit of fun.

This retreat was to be our 200th celebration and even though technically it was our 199th (our California retreat was canceled) we forged ahead.  The resilience of our military families was evident, and I was brought to tears when a Gold Star mom performed “I’m Still Standing” with her two children.

We celebrated family.  We celebrated new friends.  We celebrated hope, healing and new beginnings.  And we celebrated with an abundance of hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes knowing that we would be returning to a world that was changed. Once again, I left humbled by the resilience, strength and courage of our military families as they battle forward, breaking cycles and creating healthier paths for their kids to follow. And if that isn’t worth celebrating, I don’t know what is.
