Old enough to vote and enlist—and still believes that Birthday Wishes come true.
On September 27, 2007, something extraordinary was born. Not a person, not a product, but a promise: that military families—those who sacrifice so much—deserve a place to heal, grow stronger, and thrive together.
This September, Project Sanctuary officially turns 18 years old. Yep, we’ve reached adulthood! Old enough to join the military, old enough to vote, but not quite old enough to toast with a beer.
From Sweet 16 to 18: What’s Changed?
Two years ago, we celebrated our Sweet 16. We were in the middle of a bold dream—purchasing and transforming a retreat center in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Fast forward, and that dream now has a name: Patriot Pines. Families arrive surrounded by the San Juan Mountains, tall pines, and trails designed for both peace and play.
In just the past two years:
- We’ve built and welcomed families into four brand-new tiny homes on site.
- We’ve hosted dozens more retreats, crossing the milestone of over 2,400 families served since our beginning.
- We launched and tested new programs like Relationship Reset and Pursuing Wellness—bringing fresh tools for healing and growth.
- We’ve forged new partnerships with national organizations, expanding our reach and impact.
What hasn’t changed? Our mission. Families First. Always.
Why This Birthday Matters
Turning 18 means stepping into responsibility and adulthood. For Project Sanctuary, that means building something that lasts not just for today—but for generations to come.
Here’s the reality: it still costs $40,000 to host one retreat. Every family’s healing journey depends on the generosity of donors, partners, and people who believe military families deserve more than “thank you for your service.” They deserve tools, time, and a sanctuary to heal together.
At 18, we’re proud—but we’re also asking for help. The needs of our military families haven’t gone away. In fact, they’re growing.
Our Birthday Wish
This year, our birthday wish is simple: sustainability. We want to close out Phase One of our Patriot Pines campaign—tiny homes, playground, and family spaces, youth program spaces, staff housing—and move forward boldly into Phase Two: expanded family lodging.
With your support, we can continue to grow strong into adulthood and ensure that military families always have a safe place to land.
How You Can Celebrate With Us 🎂
- Donate and Join our Monthly Giving Program: Heroes for Hope: A birthday gift—whether $18, $180 a month—makes an immediate difference.
- Sponsor: Underwrite a retreat, sponsor a family.
- Share: Tell your community about Project Sanctuary and why you care.
Together, we’ve already made 18 years of healing possible. With your continued support, imagine what the next 18 will look like.
So, here’s to adulthood, responsibility, and still believing that birthday wishes come true. 🕯️
