We are so pleased to announce the recipient of the Rand Case Volunteer of the Year award, Wendy Karczewski.
According to volunteer coordinator, Holly Potoeski-Daddario, "Our volunteer of the year, Wendy, contributed 420 hours of her time at 8 different retreats in 2022. Wendy is someone who ALWAYS gives her whole self and is all-in when she is volunteering at Project Sanctuary retreats. Wendy has a kind heart, is compassionate about our families, passionate about our mission, reliable, enthusiastic about our programs, and most notably altruistic when it comes to others. Project Sanctuary is grateful to have Wendy as part of our family!"
Below Wendy shares why she is such a passionate volunteer for Project Sanctuary and why she chose to get involved.
How did you get connected to Project Sanctuary?
I got connected to Project Sanctuary through a First Command Conference. Heather (Ehle) gave a presentation and I thought, now here is something that can truly make a difference.
What is your favorite part of volunteering that keeps you coming back?
I keep coming back because the families keep signing up. The mission is ongoing. I also love working with the outstanding staff and great volunteers.
What is your favorite memory or most meaningful volunteer experience?
I have so many meaningful experiences. Two are foremost in my thoughts. First, I met a teen who was convinced at the beginning of the retreat that no one and nothing could help him. By the end of the retreat, he was transformed. He was grateful and already paying it forward.
I also witnessed a veteran who had already tried to end his life once make a real and solemn vow to his wife and child never to try again.
What would you say to others considering volunteering?
If someone wants to see real change in our country for the good, volunteer at a retreat. We are making a difference one family at a time!!
